My name is Dawn and I live near Penzance in Cornwall. In 2019 I decided to set up a 500l aquarium specifically for aquascaping. I quickly became obsessed with the hobby and added a few cherry shrimp and the occasional snail to control the algae. One tank led to many others and in 2021 I decided to breed shrimp and snails on a much larger scale so converted a derelict barn into what is now the thriving Shrimp Room. I started off primarily breeding shrimp hence the business name but as the business evolved aquatic snails (many different varieties) have become a huge part of my business so much so I can confidently say that I am the largest supplier of the golden apple and mystery snail in the UK. I think my success is primarily due to the quality of the shrimp & snail that I deliver. For the snails a calcium rich diet is provided from the onset thus giving the snails beautiful healthy shells and stunning colours. For the shrimp my aquariums are well established and rich in all the beneficial nutrients needed for growth and breeding.

I have approx 50 aquariums which I maintain single handedly, its very much a labour of love (the majority of time 🥵🤣). I breed all my own stock and never import so therefore I know that none of my stock carry any harmful disease. I often look at fellow shrimp sellers the majority of which import stock from overseas which I understand as they need to keep up with demand. Its something I have never chosen to do thus guaranteeing a strong & healthy Cornish shrimp or snail.

I only sell juvenile shrimp which is roughly 3 months old and this is why……..a shrimp such as a cherry red has a life span of approximately 2 years, once a shrimp has reached its adult size which takes approx 6 months it will then be impossible to age, therefore by sending a juvenile I know if given the best conditions my customers will have the shrimp for longer. I currently only breed the neocaridina shrimp as thats all time will allow as maintaining snail tanks is very time consuming.

The Shrimp Room is now moving into its 6th year and growing day by day, if in a nutshell I was sum up its success its due to how much I care. I care deeply about my livestock and take pride in giving them the best life. When packing orders I only chose the best of stock which is reflected in all my very positive customer reviews.
